A TASTY AND HEALTHY MEAL - MONSOON STILLORGAN

A TASTY AND HEALTHY MEAL - MONSOON STILLORGAN

There's one thing that seems to me to be common to all the Indian restaurants that I've visited - the service is unfailingly courteous. Monsoon is no exception to that: six of us arrived with no reservation, but within moments they'd re-arranged tables to accommodate us. I began explaining to the children that after the book 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' came 'The Restaurant at the End if the Universe'. This, I explained to them carefully, was not a place at the outer reaches of space, it was a time. The restaurant sits its diners down two hours before the universe ends. The diners watch this awesome spectacle over their meal, then massive time turbines bring the restaurant back in time by two hours ready for the next sitting. Monsoon didn't look much like The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - and there were no alien species there that I could recognise either. It's a small room, up a flights of steps from where you can pick up your take away meals. There are nods to the sub-continent with beautifully carved wooden representations of Hindu deities on the walls, but otherwise the room isn't themed. As we've done in the past, we let Isabella do the ordering for us. She chose us a variety of dishes: a chicken Tikka Massala which the children like, a Kashmiri Rogan Josh - a spicy lamb dish that I'm fond of, a king prawn biryani which John and Isabella enjoy, a bowl of dal, a spinach dish called Paneer Methi Malai, and lastly a Banarsi Aloo. The starter portions are priced around €8 or €9 and the main courses cost between €15 and €18. To complete the order Isabella also ordered some Nan bread and Pilau rice. There's a short wine list, but it's very fairly priced with a few wines under €20 and the majority of them under €25. We decided against a bottle wine, instead we ordered Lassis for the children, which is a yoghurt drink that comes either as a sweet drink or as a savoury one, and John and I had Indian beer. The first thing to arrive were the night-light plate warmers on which the copper pots containing our various dishes were placed to keep them hot. Essentially what we'd ordered was three starters and three main courses plus some extras for the six of us, but by the time they'd all arrived the tables seems to be awash with food. Even a fairly strong appetite would begin to wilt after some of these dishes. I did manage to taste most of what was on the table and everything I tasted was very much to my liking, with the possible exception of the yoghurt drinks. The spices were all carefully handled, each dish had clean, crisp tastes. By the time we'd eaten our fill there appeared to be as much on the table as there had been when we started, but our waiter sensibly suggested he'd pack up what was left and we could take it home for later - a suggestion we were happy to accept. A tasty and healthy meal for six that came with a price tag of €106.30, which I thought was very good value. Fittingly, we then drove home in a monsoon.

GO TO PLACE FOR BEST INDIAN FOOD - IRISH MIRROR

GO TO PLACE FOR BEST INDIAN FOOD - IRISH MIRROR

We are delighted to announce that Monsoon Stillorgan has been named as a Best Quality Indian Cuisine in the Stillorgan area by the Irish Mirror. Monsoon is well known in the Stillorgan area as the go-to place for great Indian food, and it does a brisk take-away business. It’s been a long time since we had a staff night out, so when it was finally safe to do so we made sure to choose very carefully. To anyone living in the Stillorgan area, Monsoon is well known as the go-to place for great Indian food and it does a brisk take-away trade (you can check out their take-away menu here ). We even included them in our Taste of Stillorgan feature – so expectations were high! The first thing any of us noticed on entering Monsoon was not the decor (which is fab, by the way) but the aroma. Wonderful, spicy scents drift around the dining area, whetting the appetite and promising tasty treats ahead. Manager Arun greeted us warmly and made sure our group of 10 was seated comfortably in the small but well laid out dining area. Menus in hand, we set about deciding what to eat, and it was a challenge! I was torn between at least half a dozen dishes, ultimately opting for the Chicken Jalfrezi. As a large group, there was a wide range of preferences, so between chicken, lamb and vegetarian dishes we ended up with a good sampling from across the menu. Before the mains arrived, we were treated to a selection of delicious starters, including the Tellicherry Pepper Chicken, Ajwaini Jheenga (marinated prawns), Kumar’s Aloo Tikki Chat (spiced potato dumplings) and Colaba Seekh (spiced lamb skewer) – a personal favourite. Honestly, we could have stopped at the starters and I would have been delighted. When the mains arrived, there were ‘ooh’s and ‘aah’s around the table as each new dish was presented, alongside generous portions of saffron rice and a selection of freshly baked breads.

MONSOON STILLORGAN - BEST DUBLIN DINING GUIDE

MONSOON STILLORGAN - BEST DUBLIN DINING GUIDE

Monsoon is a much loved neighbourhood Indian restaurant in Stillorgan for over 20 years. We dropped in on the team which elevates the dining experience with exceptional hospitality and culinary invention. “Our business is all about passion, sourcing the freshest and best of ingredients. We both come from traditional farming families. I joined here as a part-time staff when I was studying. I love the place and Stillorgan has a lovely community. When the opportunity arose to take it over I saved some money and partnered with Alok. We took it over late 2019, just in time for the pandemic. as the first time lockdown happened, we focused all of your energy on improving takeaway and delivery service and kept on going. We survived through it. I had worked here for ten years so knew exactly how it worked. It just needed a bit of TLC. We looked at the wine list, as well, and sampled hundreds off wines to ensure a perfect selection to match our food. Indian food is always evolving, customers are open to exploring new spices and flavours. Some people like the classic dishes also, so we try to strike a balance between traditional and exploration. We do specials which are hard to get anywhere else such as “Idili” steamed dumplings served with special zingy lentil soup. We are always experimenting to see what the market likes but balancing that with something traditional. We keep an eye on international restaurants to see what they are coming up with and take inspiration from. Our bread and butter is takeaway but it is always lovely to have people here who can come in and sit and chat for nights out or family occasions.” Monsoon Stillorgan Platter Arun and Alok Monsoon Stillorgan Starter: Assorted platter – Kesari Jheenga, Aloo Tikki, Chicken Tikka and Sheek Kebab Main course: Non Veg Thali which had sample size of Butter Chicken, Lamb Rogan Josh, Goan Prawn Curry and Aloo Jeera. 4-5 The Hill, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin.
